"Recent work in Combinatorial Designs
and Posets"
Abstract:
The talk will focus on recent results or work in progress, and input from the
audience will be welcomed. The talk has 3 main components.
-
An introduction to the information available in a computer generated catalogue with Grüttmüller and Rylands. The catalogue is over 30Gb in size. It provides all CSS designs up to 35 points or 7 blocks, or the corresponding
dual antichains with up to 35 sets or 7 elements. Summary information is included in the catalogue, producing or counting representatives of various
equivalence classes. There is a current opportunity to ask for relevant
user-defined structures to be found or counted.
For example: What is the smallest size maximal at antichain of 3-sets and 4-sets on [7], and how many non-isomorphic ones are there? For which m; k do k-regular antichains of size m exist on [7]? What
are the minimum and maximum possible volumes of minimum size (n; k)CSSs for
fixed n; k?
The catalogue allows for the development of proofs involving the existence or non-existence of larger structures such as minimum size (n;k)CSSs for n > 35. This will be illustrated. This involves joint work with Gronau, D'Arcy and Dau.
-
A report on work in progress with Leck and Simpson on minimising the size of a union-closed collections generated by a given number of 3-sets. This extends results presented by Leck in July in Rostock.
-
A report on some new work in progress with Johnson, Leck and Hartmann on
symmetric-difference-closed collections from the poset perspective,
and a possible link with the union-closed sets conjecture. It will also introduce some recent relevant poset calculators by Bezrukov, and which are available on line.
